The Samsung BD-D5500C not only supports 3D Blu-ray discs, but also streams music and video from just about every service known to man.I have mixed feelings about 3D. Much as I enjoyed "Avatar" and "Despicable Me" on the big screen, I'm not exactly dying to bring the 3D experience into my home.
On the other hand, why not give myself the option? All I need is a 3D-ready TV (or projector) and Blu-ray player. Today only, and while supplies last, DailySteals has a killer deal on the latter: a refurbished Samsung BD-D5500C 3D-capable Blu-ray player for $69.99, plus $4.99 for shipping.
That price rivals, and even exceeds, most of the non-3D Blu-ray players I've featured in the past. And it lists for $159.99. Suh-weet!
The BD-D5500C offers all the specs you'd expect from a Blu-ray player, plus support for 3D discs. I've been testing a very similar model with an Optoma HD33 3D projector (which is really slick, FYI), and it works like a charm.
The other ace up the player's sleeve is Samsung's Smart Hub content portal, which lets you stream media from a huge range of services: Amazon, Hulu, MLB.TV, Netflix, Pandora, Vudu, and so on. The Hub also offers apps and games, and even supports DLNA, meaning you can potentially stream content from your PCs and other devices.
The BD-D5500C supports Ethernet connections, of course, but Wi-Fi isn't built in; for that you'll need Samsung's LinkStick Wi-Fi adapter, which is available online for around $50 (though this outfit has a compatible substitute for $28.95 on eBay). Personally, I think Ethernet is better for streaming anyway, but it's your call.
Ultimately, this is one seriously loaded Blu-ray player for an amazingly low price. Because it's a refurb, the warranty expires after 90 days--the one and only downside to this otherwise terrific deal.
Bonus deal #1: Starting at 11 a.m. ET, CNET has a pretty killer offer for audiophiles: the Able Planet Sound Clarity noise-cancelling headphones for $199 shipped. These top-rated headphones have a list price of $249.99. But wait, there's more: you also get an 8GB iPod Nano! (It's the sixth-gen model, meaning last year's, but still mighty sweet.) Combined value: $378.
Bonus deal #2: Need a good speaker option to pair with the Samsung player? Walmart has the refurbished Vizio VSB-200B Sound Bar for $68 plus sales tax. Shipping is free if you opt for site-to-store. Not the best price I've ever seen, but still a tremendous deal. (New ones still sell for $100 and up.)
